# Mexica calendar glyph sources and licenses

This manifest covers only the local `exhibition-715` Mexica module. All
rendered glyph assets are SVG with transparent backgrounds.

## Tonalpohualli day signs

The 20 local files in `mexica-calendar-glyphs-source/` are reproductions in a
consistent Codex Laud / central-Mexican manuscript style. They are used
without semantic redrawing; filenames were normalized for the application.

The rain day sign is traditionally represented through features of the rain
deity Tlaloc; the source file is therefore mapped to `quiahuitl.svg` in the
local calendar vocabulary.

## Xiuhpohualli veintena signs

The 19 unchanged JPEG references in `mexica-calendar-month-glyphs-source/`
were created by Grae Bear, CC BY 3.0, and come from the Wikimedia Commons
[Aztec months glyphs category](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Aztec_months_glyphs).

The matching SVGs were replaced on 2026-09-05 with **modern simplified manual
curve redrawings after those references**. This is not a downloaded historical
SVG set, a high-resolution scan, or a restoration of details missing from the
small JPEG references. The main silhouettes and month mapping are retained;
contours and spacing are cleaned for small display sizes. Cream/gold colors
are a modern interface treatment, not claimed manuscript colors. The files
contain ordinary SVG curves/shapes, no raster images, scanline runs, embedded
fonts, blur filters, or external dependencies. Backgrounds are transparent.

All 18 twenty-day periods and the five-day Nemontemi period retain their
existing filenames and symbol IDs. Each SVG includes source and adaptation
credits. The adaptations are distributed under CC BY 3.0.

Rebuild staged copies with `.design/mexica-calendar-wheel/tools/build-month-curve-glyphs.py`.
The older `vectorize_month_glyphs.py` produces the superseded scanline edition;
it must not be used to regenerate this curve edition.

## Numerals

- Units 1–19 are locally drawn as additive dots following documented Mexica
  unit notation.
- The 20 flag sign uses [Mexica 20.svg](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mexica_20.svg),
  created by Juan Miguel and released to the public domain.
- The local display copy retains that source geometry and uses a rounded warm
  numeral stroke matching units 1–19, with a filtered dark separation outline
  behind that same path. No historical shape is filled or redrawn.
- The notation reference used for the implementation is UNAM CCH's
  [Sistema de numeración posicional](https://portalacademico.cch.unam.mx/cibernetica1/sistemas-de-numeracion/sistema-de-numeracion-posicional).
